Virtus IT has a strategic relationship with SMN who provide expertise in the field of M2M, specifically with regard to communication protocols. SMN have developed, and own the IP for a "Skinny SIP" protocol for use between end user devices/machines and a Gateway.
Skinny SIP uses about 10% of the bandwidth that SIP uses, which means that for machines that send small packets of data frequently, there is significant reduction in the need for bandwidth.
The smaller SIP stack and associated processing requiremenst mean that the machines running Skinny SIP require less power to operate when compared with those utilising SIP.
The Gateway translates Skinny SIP into SIP, which means that the machine traffic can be processed through the existing Telco IMS networks without any additional investment.
With a projected 50 Billion machines that will be communicating by 2020, bandwidth considerations are an important consideration, as is the ease with which manufacturers can get their devices to communicate with the rest of the world. SMN has an answer to both.
