Increasing the value of TeleHealth and TeleCare

Definition of TeleHealth/mHealth

TeleHealth is also referred to as mHealth.

‘Telehealth monitoring is the remote exchange of physiological data between a patient at one location and medical staff at another to assist in diagnosis and monitoring (this could include support for people with lung function problems, diabetes, etc.) It includes (amongst other things) a home unit to measure and monitor temperature, blood pressure and other vital signs for clinical review at a remote location (for example, a hospital site).'

Examples of TeleHealth devices are:

  • Blood pressure monitoring.
  • Blood glucose monitoring.
  • Cardiac arrhythmia monitoring.
  • Asthma monitoring.
  • Medication reminder systems.

TeleCare and TeleHealth systems can use wired/fixed phone line communications and or wireless technologies such as mobile phones as the basis for sending information to a relevant centre. When using mobile phone/3G/4G communications, these systems are also referred to as mCare and mHealth systems.
